See below for a statement from the Board of Trustees on the Alberta Government’s recent announcement about proposed legislation pertaining to gender identity:

“The Black Gold School Division’s Board of Trustees is committed to providing students with welcoming, caring, respectful, safe and healthy learning environments that respect diversity and foster a sense of belonging. Every student within the Division has the right to learn and work in schools that promote equity of opportunity, dignity, and respect.

We understand that the recent announcement by the Alberta Government about proposed legislation pertaining to gender identity may have caused uncertainty and concern to some members of our school communities. As a Board, we are closely following developments and are committed to active dialogue with the Province when their engagement sessions begin.

Based on the information provided thus far, we anticipate consultations to continue well into the fall. At this time there is no change in current practices as defined in the Education Act and Division policies and procedures.

Our commitment to creating safe, welcoming, inclusive, and equitable spaces for all students is unwavering. The well-being of each student remains a top priority as we work together with students, staff, and families on our mission to inspire success for all.”
